HD HomeRun and Close Captions

Have there been any improvements or configs I might be missing in order to get close captions to get captured when recording a program off of HD Homerun Flex 4K?

ATSC3 closed caption works in some markets and not others. What market are you in?

The full stream is recorded as-is. However, if you are referring to ATSC3 broadcasts, closed captions are different there than ATSC1.

In ATSC1, the closed captions are actually embedded in the video stream. IIRC, with ATSC3, captions are now in an XML-based format, and sent as a separate stream alongside the video and audio streams.

Which device are you having errors viewing the closed captions on? Is that device local, or remote?

From the ATSC 3.0 specs:

ATSC 3.0 captions are required to be provided as a separate component using W3C’s TTML Text and Image Profiles for Internet Media Subtitles and Captions (IMSC1) standard, which can be transmitted though both broadcast and broadband as described in A/343 [19]. This format was selected since it supports a world-wide language and symbol table and has been used successfully by other industry segments. It also supports regulatory requirements and is U.S. safe harbor for IP delivery.
In addition to the required IMSC1 component, the broadcaster may optionally supply CTA 708 captions carried as supplemental enhancement information (SEI) within the video stream as described in A/341 [15].

So, closed captions are transmitted in TTML format; and additionally traditional CTA-708—digital closed captions as used in ATSC1—may optionally be used, too.

Apparently Ffmpeg—and therefore mpv—does not have support for decoding TTML, only muxing and encoding.

I imagine that until this is implemented in Ffmpeg, support for closed captions in Channels will be limited to broadcasts using CEA-708.

(Apparently there is a Python project to convert from TTML to SubRip: ttconv.)

EMBY Beta uses FFMPEG4 and Closed Captions work for ATSC3. So a new MPV needs to be compiled.

Had to watch this us on nbc 3.0 feed. Not sure if I am describing this correctly but getting an audio closed caption is that part of the delivery of the 3.0 shows and any way to disable it?
