I don’t understand. For example, now when I play back a dvr on my iPad, my c.p.u is at 30%. I’m assuming because it’s transcoding to .mp4? If I buY the extend, my cpu will be at 0 and the extend would be transcoding?

The extend only works on live streams. DVR recordings get transcoded by the NAS, so leaving it on original will stop that.
Watching recordings on iPad at home does not require transcoding.
Are you at home? Is your Streaming Quality set to original?
Why don’t I need to transcode. Aren’t recordings mpeg? I thought iOS needs mp4?
The Channels app can play mpeg2 on all devices.
So Apple TV can direct play mpeg?
The channels app on AppleTV can play their own files natively.
