HDHomeRun Flex 4K server requirements

I have looked at a lot of info for hdhomerun and channels dvr but have not found what I'm looking for.

If I have a hdhomerun flex 4k with a disk attacked via usb, do I still need a server to use channels dvr? Or is a server required regardless of a disk on the flex 4k?

Setting up a server is no problem if I need to, I'm just trying to understand what configurations are necessary. (Tablo has a very nice architecture diagram on their pages but I was unable to find somethings similar for channels dvr)

Thanks!

You cannot use the Flex as a server or record to the attached drive.

Drives attached to HDHomeRun devices (or those with drives built-in like the Servio or Scribe) can only be accessed using SiliconDust's own DVR software.

Channels can use the tuners, but any drive directly attached to the tuner will be inaccessible. You need a separate computer running Channels and hosting the storage for the recordings.

I had the same setup and didn’t like the native HDHR app. I looked around and found channels and set up an nvidia shield pro as the channels server and took the USB off the HDHR and formatted it and connected it to the Shield. Works great.

I use a Synology 218+ with 6 gigs of RAM and it works perfectly every time. I watch through several Apple TV 4ks.

Thanks for the great responses, I'll set up a server. I have a Intel Atom D525 (1.8GHz, 2 core, 4 threads) that I could use for this. (This CPU does not have Quick Sync -- listed in recommended requirement) Opinions on whether or not this would work OK or whether I need something with a bit more horsepower.

Give it a try. You should be fine without quicksync. I believe that is used for transcoding which I try to avoid so I never use it anyway. If you want to squeeze all the performance you can out of that box try installing Ubuntu server on it. Works great with Channels.
