HDHR from another location

I’ve been looking into adding another HDHR from another house into my Channels DVR. Is there any documented example of how one could set that up? If not, is it something that seems plausible?

I’ve been able to watch the channels from the HDHR by connecting to the other house’s VPN, but not as part of the DVR. When you go to the HDHR’s IP address on the network, it looks like there is a live stream of each channel, so I’m wondering if I can somehow use that 5004 port to access those streams outside of the home’s network and integrate into my Channels DVR.

I've never tested this but in theory, this could be possible. You would need to set up a port forward on the remote firewall and I would restrict it to your public ip address. Then set up the ip address of the HDHR on the channels server to be the remote public address. Like I said I have never tested this but it's just basic networking so it may work. Im not sure of all the ports involved (I thought it was just port 80 but I could be wrong). To be safe you could run wireshark to find out. Of course this is unencrypted but I would be worried less about that and more about restricting the remote firewall to only accept your public ip address that channels is behind. If your public ip changes then this could be a hassle.

I actually do this, but with a VPN, my HDHR is at home, and my channels instance is on a VM in a Datacenter, there is a VPN between them all.

A full HD stream however will chew up a decent amount of bandwidth, and if the connection is unstable you'll suffer from interrupted viewings as it can't error correct it.

I was thinking the same thing about the port forwarding and was trying to test it. I’m gonna have to wait until I get back there to actually try setting it up.
