Hide TV Shows with No New Episodes

I mainly use the Collections feature to find and watch recorded shows (instead of using watch next, new shows, etc.). I setup a collection for myself and for each family member so we can easily find the shows we like.

While this works well, there is one item that would drastically improve how this works. The ability to 'Hide' tv shows/series that have no new episodes. Is this currently possible using some of the collection auto rules?

Why would this be helpful? For the following reasons:

  1. It would greatly reduce the number of shows that appear in My Collections. Shows that have already been watch would be auto hidden. Only shows with unwatched episodes would appear. You could still access the hidden shows through the main library.

  2. When the current season ends, that show gets buried down on the list. Once a new season starts up again (months later or even next year), it is hard to tell. If it was hidden until a unwatched show is recorded, then it will show up in my collections automatically. Much easier to see when a new episode comes out.

Ideally there would be an option on the collection level to "Hide show if no unwatched episodes". It could also be useful on an episode level.

Can this currently be done using some of the automatic collection rules?

Not sure if it would work, but what about a combination of labels and watched state.

  • Create a label for each family member
  • Assign the respective label(s) to the shows that correspond to each family member
  • Change the collection to use a combination of smart rules:
    • Label is person
    • Watched is false

Use a Smart Rule instead of manually added content, and use the Watched field and set it to False.

You'll need to add your shows via the Smart Rule as well. The best way to do this, with how you're making collections, would be to use Labels. Instead of manually adding each show to the Collection, add a "Dad" label to the show, and set the Smart Rule on the collection to pull in any shows with the label "Dad".

It's important to know that Collections' items are not updated immediatly in real time according to their Smart Rules, but they'll generally be up to date when you go to access them.

Very Nice! I will give this a try and see how it works. Sounds like the combinations of Labels and the Smart Rules will work great.
