How many streams and do i need an HDHomeRun

I was just wondering if I need an hdhomerun prime anymore? Mine is slowly dying, has issues powering up sometimes...

I have Verizon FIOS and through TVE I get about 130 channels..this covers just about everything I care about. I guess my question is how many streams can I use through TVE? So If I have 3 TV's on in the house all tuned to the same channel, will that work even if Tuner sharing is disabled (I dont' know if TVE uses this feature anyways????).

This could totally negate the need for a 6 tuner HDHomeRun if it is possible.

Could also shave a few bucks returning cable cards...

As many as your provider and your internet bandwidth allows, figure 5-6 Mbit/sec for a stream.

If Tuner sharing doesn't work for TVE, then it depends on your bandwidth for the three separate streams.

Good question, would also like to know if tuner sharing works with Channels TVE.

Disclaimer: I only use TVE for one channel in HD that I get in SD from my Cable Provider and normally don't use any Channels client besides a Browser and Channels iOS devices.

Tuner sharing works with TVE

There is no limit on TVE streams apart from your bandwidth/cpu available.

You probably still want a HDHR for your local channels.

Thanks, don't want to throw the thread off-track, but what if you're recording from TVE and other clients that have tuner-sharing enabled are watching the same TVE channel that's being recorded? How many TVE streams are being consumed over the Internet? I suppose it depends on when each client started Live streaming vs. when the Channels TVE recording started?

I think we all compare Channels to what we used before Channels, so many different scenarios.

Tuner sharing means one stream from the internet or hdhr is sent to multiple recordings and/or clients. If tuner sharing is on, then the tuner is shared. It doesn't matter who started watching or recording first.

Got it. So TVE tuner sharing is just like HDHomeRun tuner sharing as far as Channels DVR is concerned.
If the device (TVE or HDHOMERUN) is tuned, it's shared among clients for LiveTV and the DVR(for recording).

Maybe a stupid question, but why must I enable Tuner sharing on every device? Unless I am missing something, I would think you would want to set it centrally?

I also wonder why tuner sharing is not the default.

It's not the default because Channels was for live TV first, and DVR came later. Also, tuner sharing consumes additional bandwidth. (Without tuner sharing, a stream goes directly from the tuner to the client; with tuner sharing, the stream goes to the server, then to the client.)

Rather use bandwidth on a 1gig network than tuners ... It should be default for dvr apps. Right now you have to set it on every device and every new install after that.
