Hypercritical- / ATP-Inspired: Temporary Captions with Instant Replay

I’m sure some of us have read John Siracusa’s annual blog post on streaming apps and listened to this week’s Accidental Tech Podcast.

He had a great suggestion to turn on closed captions for those times we have to hit the instant replay (15 sec) button because we didn’t hear or understand what someone said. Perhaps because of lag of closed captions, the closed captions could continue for 30 seconds, including the 15 second instant replay. I imagine a setting to enable this feature, as the default should be how it is now (user setting for captions on/off by default all the time).

This sounds like the "What did he say?" thing on Apple TV, announced back in 2015. Or are you referring to something different? If so, this doesn't work natively in Channels because they have to use a custom video player to support OTA video streams.

(Or did I completely misunderstand this post?)

Darn. Yes, it’s a “What Did He Say?” feature.

Yes, but what a great feature request for Channels to incorporate natively then? There could be a setting to enable/disable so everyone's happy, but if an instant reply could automatically toggle on CC for 20-30 seconds, similar to how Siri does it on AppleTV's native video player, that would be very cool indeed.
