I have channels that are pixelating

Been having issues the last few days. I have missing artwork on the "On Now" page and some channels are pixelating. This is happening on my channels apps on Apple TVs that are hard wired and wifi. I've unplugged and restarted my prime box and crossed and restarted the channels apps.

Missing channels: email [email protected] with hdhomerun id and channel numbers.

Pixelation issues: usually due to either bad signal or bad network connection. Is it happening on all channels or only some? What about SD vs HD channels?

It is on some HD channels and didn’t start until a update I think it was mid week. I don’t think it’s network and my modem signal and noise data all looks normal. i will send a email to [email protected] since the issue is also happening on the HDHomeRun app that I use on my iMac.

Pretty strange. By modem I assume you meant hdhomerun? You can verify the signal strength on the hdhomerun web ui while a channel is tuned in.

Yes I meant the HDHomeRun web ui signal strength is 94% and quality is 100%

Cool. Can you try streaming that channel on your computer, to compare? You can also try the free “instatv pro” app on your Apple TV to see if it has the same issue.

I was just streaming it on my iMac and for example NAT GEO Wild is pixelating on the channels app but also while streaming on the computer

It’s is pixelating on the computer, or it is not?

Streaming to both at the same time will 2x bandwidth and make things worse if that’s the issue.

Sorry. Yes it is pixelating on the computer. I’m only using 1 at a time for testing purposes.

Sounds like an issue with the HDHR or cable card then. I’m not really sure what would cause it…

Worth asking SiliconDust about it as well. They will have you enable diagnostics on the PRIME and might see some errors.

I just emailed them. Thanks for your help and time.

This sounds a lot like an issue I saw earlier this week with my setup. I have 3 Connects and at least one of them was experiencing significant pixelation on ABC and CBS on both Apple TVs that I tried.

Upon physical inspection of the Connects and switch they were attached to, I observed abnormally fast flashing of the data lights on the switch suggesting that they were flooding the network. Rebooting all 3 Connects (I probably could have just done one) fixed the issue immediately.

Note that prior to rebooting the Connects I did try to determine which unit was the problem but there was insufficient logging in the DVR and the HDHomerun to discern exactly which unit(s) was causing the issue.

I chalked it all up to a SiliconDust issue until reading this post. At this point I cannot say that these two issues are the same but the are eerily similar both in timing and description.

I wish that was the problem. I have checked the Prime boxes and the connections are tight. I have also restarted them and taken out the cable cards before rebooting. All to no avail. As suggested I have sent a email to silicon dust support so hopefully they will be helpful.

OK, good luck with your issue. I guess mine was as I initially thought; anomalous behavior.

Tim, was there any follow up from SD on this? I just realized I have a similar problem with a single HD channel which has good signal strength.

So it’s ongoing. SD asked me for the channels I was having problems with and had me go into terminal to allow a log file. They found that I had 7 HD channels that had low signal strength. I contacted Comcast, they sent a signal to the cable card, that didn’t fix it. Comcast then sent out a tech that didn’t find any issues. I’m going tomorrow to swap out the cable card. I’ll update probably on Tuesday.

In my case it’s the local OTA ABC channel giving me problems. Curious, what is considered “low” for signal strength?

My ABC channel is at 77% signal with 98% signal quality. I see artifacts on this channel, but another channel with a lower signal strength is fine.

If its a prime/on cable, and If the 7 channels are all on the same frequency (or close to each other), then there are some things to look at:

  • Try moving the HDHR away/closer to other equipment (router/modem/etc). There may be interference. Also, turn off your cell phone temporarily. Some LTE bands/signals can also be the source of interference.
  • If you have splitters with unused ports or unused cable drops, cap them with a terminator. Interference/loss can happen with open ports.
  • There may be an old filter on the line. Some locations have changed hands (companies) so many times, there may be something on the line from several years back; and the item could be located anywhere (ie:from your location all the way to the pole or even higher up on the primary distribution point ). They would need specialized equipment (not all trucks/techs have it) to detect those. I have seen one location that had 2 difference filters from two difference companies on the line and the current cableco had no documentation about either. Most of these issues first are discovered when the cablecos redo their systems for higher internet speeds and/or go all digital and realign the frequencies…

I started having the same issue a few weeks ago. Happens on different channels. Normally, getting out of live streaming in Channels on tvOS and clicking on the same channel (to restart the streaming) fixes the problem.

I’ve rebooted the HDHomeRun Prime, but the issue continues. This happens about once or twice every evening.
