Infuse Pro 5

Hey, has anyone tried the new Infuse Pro 5 ATV4 app yet?
Been using version 4 for quite a while as I use a NAS instead of an always on PC or server. Found version 4 played most things but some films were either out of sync or juddery. Heard the new version has additional codecs, just wandering if anyone’s had similar issues, and does the subscription Pro 5 resolve it?

I have upgraded from Infuse Pro 4 to Pro 5. Infuse is my go-to app for playing stored content because of it’s ability to play most formats on Apple devices (both iOS and AppleTV) and the slick interface it presents using pulled metadata to organize and display content.

Haven’t noticed any significant difference with regards to playback but I was generally happy with playback so this wasn’t a huge concern for me. I currently use it to play a library of TV series and Movies I have on a USB 3.0 drive connected to my Asus router. I generally don’t have issues playing content in this configuration including HEVC files at least HEVCs with lower bitrates.

The advantage I see going from Infuse Pro 4 to Pro 5 is the syncing of your shared library across devices. So any metadata edits as well as tracking of what is watched is synced across devices. In a home with 4 ATVs that is a nice feature. I’ve also seen an improvement in Pro 5s ability to find metadata based on filenames.

Only a couple of days in so that’s about all i have at this point.

Just took the plunge. Thought I can always cancel as it was offering a free trial. Not noticed any difference with the metadata, still have the same films which I have to manually edit. However, all the films where I had sync issues, or just juddered now play smooth. Some older films also looked a little grainy on playback on v4, I just assumed it was down to the download of the original file, it’s not. They all now look crisp. I’m well impressed. 3D films even look ace and get automatically recognised by my TV, which didn’t happen before

I got Infuse 4 just before 5 came out. I’m not sure if I will upgrade.

it won’t play WMV files even though it is listed as supported.

some WTV won’t play.

does the improvement in metadata extend to WTV files? right now it does a really bad job and it is a problem trying to figure out what the files are for series recordings.

There were a couple of movies where I noticed small problems with video playback with v4 I’ll see if v5 makes a difference. Version 4 didn’t always organize television series correctly. I put each season in a directory named *-s01, -*s02 and then episodes within the directories *-s01e01, *-s02e02 and two of my AppleTvs would correctly show all series and seasons at the master level while two would show directories at the top level. Now everything displays properly.

I’ve never played with 3D for home. Not really a priority for me but at some point I should give it a try as I do have equipment that supports 3D.

I have it, but I generally still use MrMC with Plex as the backend. The HW decoding with MrMC (VideoToolBox under Acceleration in the Video Settings) makes it a lot smoother than Infuse and I haven’t had an issue with microstutters anymore. The one thing Infuse has that MrMC doesn’t is VC-1 support in Infuse 5, so I use it mainly just for that.

Huh. AFAIK VideoToolbox is not available on tvOS.

It’s backported to Kodi as well, so you should be able to check out either code to see what they’re doing.

I thought with Plex the Plex server is doing the transcoding? So MrMC would probably be getting an apple native format that can be handled by the GPU. Plex should offer smoother video playback but more complicated in that it requires a server to do the heavy lifting. I may be wrong, but that’s how I think it works.

Infuse, on the other hand is doing audio/video decoding locally on the ATV or iOS device. So if it is a non-native apple format, it has to convert (similar to what Channels has to do for the MPEG-2 files). Given that Infuse does a great job playing most common formats.

No, MrMC doesn’t have Plex do any transcoding. Everything’s direct played, like Infuse would do. It basically just replaces the Kodi database with Plex, though you could still do a tradition database or use MySQL.

I do like the interface of Infuse better, though, so I’m not saying one’s definitely better than the other. I just prefer MrMC at this moment over Infuse but I keep them both updated and support the devs for both of them.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I’ll check MrMC out again. I looked at it when it was initially released and it didn’t grab my interest.
