I can’t quantify this but I have a feeling battery usage on iPad is quite high during live TV or playback of recording. Has anyone made any measurements?
I would expect it to be. Or do you mean higher than if you were playing, say, Netflix or Amazon Prime?
I know this is a super old topic, but I agree that Channels does seem to chew through iPad battery pretty quickly. Definitely faster than Plex. However, when I use Plex it is usually a movie locally on my iPad, rather than streaming from a server.
The HDHomeRun video format is MPEG2 which is not natively supported by iOS. Our video player decodes the video in CPU. So you should expect more battery use.
iOS decodes h.264 and HEVC via the GPU, so those format use less battery.
