Is chrome essential for channels DVR?

I run my channels DVR server on a 2011 iMac. I previously had set it up using chrome as my default browser and have decided that I no longer want chrome on my machine. Well I tried to access my DVR on my Apple TV, I got a message saying chrome must be installed. Is there any way around this? Thank you

Chrome is used to authorize your account access to individual different channel streams.

So in short, yes, it is for TVE viewing.
This is my best understanding of how it works and why you “need” chrome.
Hope that helps!

Correct, chrome must be installed for TVE. It doesn't have to be default and you don't have to use it, but it must be installed.

You guys (Dev team) are absolute wizards with the channels apps and service overall. This is by far the coolest way to watch TV and consume media. That all being said LOL...It would be great if they were a way To avoid having to use chrome. I would prefer her not to have it installed on my machine at all.

In most cases it's the TVE provider that requires it.
Also, I think that chromium will also work if it makes you feel better.

You can use Chromium. And I'm not certain how Channels' searches for Chrome, but you might be able to use Iridium, too. (You might be able to symlink /usr/bin/google-chrome or /usr/bin/chromium-browser to another Chromium, derivative, too, like Brave or Vivaldi.)

(Iridium is a de-Googled Chromium, with more secure defaults.)

Thank you so much for this info! If you don’t mind could you please explain how I can do this? I’m a long time Mac user, So I’m pretty good with instructions. Again very much appreciate us as I am actively working to de Google entirely.

When I first installed, I tried the symlink to MS Edge on my windows system hoping that would work...but no go. It found it OK, but failed anyway with a dependencies error.c

It’s funny because for a while I was a huge google fan and even in this community I had been using the chromecast with Google TV. I have found overall that Apple TV is infinitely more stable and just an overall better experience so that was a partial catalyst towards moving me completely away from Google services. Will there be any Less privacy concern and using chromium for channels, or would I still need to actually sign into chromium using my Google account in order for it to work with channels?

You don't need to sign in, even if using Chrome.

Channels uses its own profile for Chrome/Chromium. It does not use or access any saved passwords or settings you may have in Chrome for your regular user.

Trying to set up a new DVR server on Windows 10. Wanted to use Chromium instead of Chrome for this instance. Have Chromium installed but it's not recognized trying to add TVE source (Philo).

Does Chromium only work on non-WIndows?

It will work if its in your path and called chrome.exe

Otherwise you would need to rename/move to C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe

I tried to create a symlink in the Google folder, but then it fails with a fork side-by-side error.

Where is chromium installed?

Default installer location....shortcut points to
C:\Users\xxxx\AppData\Local\Chromium\Application\chrome.exe

But....it does work adding the folder to the path.....thanks.
