Is macOS "Fast User Switching" a workaround for having Mac hardware transcoding available at all times? As we know, it's not available when running as a service

As I understand it, the Mac hardware transcoder is not available when running as a service. This is a bummer because I have multiple user accounts on my family iMac and don't want to lose Hardware acceleration when logged out.

So is the solution to simply leave the account that's running Channels DVR logged in at all times, and my family can just use fast user switching?

Ideally they should be able to go about their daily Mac life without ever thinking about the DVR running "in the background".

I just want to be sure that if they are logged in to their account (and providing the Channels DVR app is running on the other account) then hardware transcoding and hardware deinterlacing is still available to any client player.

You would have to try it and see

I can definitely do that but is there a way I can verify if it’s hardware or software? Is there a hidden info overlay that shows video stats while playing, etc?

@tmm1 I would also like to know whether there is a way to verify whether hardware of software transcoding is being utilized.

It's listed under Settings > Advanced > Transcoder
