Is there a way to not have to have a computer that runs 24/7?

There’s a technical reason that I can’t recall off the top of my head. I think it was discussed in the YTTV TVE thread if you want to search for it.

Raspberry Pi is the lowest cost, lowest power solution availble...

Already missed my first recording because I didn't realize my laptop came unplugged and the battery died

2 things to keep in mind when using Channels DVR. You need a processing unit (computer like) to run the Channels DVR server software. And you need storage. Both can be within the same box or separated.

I used to have a small form factor computer running 27/7 and have my recordings stored, first on a USB drive then moved onto a NAS later on.

Recently, I upgraded my NAS for something more powerful and went with the Synology DS720+. On the long term, the way to go to backup your computers, store safely your photos, backup to cloud and also run server softwares like Channels DVR. A NAS is a lot more than just a network storage.

I had mine on a NAS but then the NAS refused to boot so I lost all my recordings .. recovered everything else pictures etc....... so I decided to go with Windows 10 I7 PC using storage spaces with 2 8 TB drives that I salvaged from the NAS on a dual usb3 docking station. Storage Spaces allows me to mirror the drives ... and in Case of failure I can easily move the DVR and Drives to any windows 10PC.

I chose this way because of redundancy and ease of recovering. The DVR is something we have come to rely on ... so recovery in the event of a disaster is a must.

Nas's are great but when they have a hardware failure it is a pain in the A??.

Good point. My Synology is sporting two mirrored 4 TB drives. After installation of Channels DVR we have ~3 TB storage space.
