IT guys needs suggestions

#1 Yes, you can move the recordings as that is what I did. Simply follow the info in the Support Articles. Channels Support - Move Recordings (getchannels.com)

#2 I have had very few issues with the skip commercial but it is not 100% that is for sure. Still, for me it is working well so far. I just learned not to touch the remote when it fails as i will be watching that ad over every time I hit the skip forward button. Seems the same as with the NAS as with my external. start up is lightning fast which my wife loves!

#3 if the DATA file is fine (backing up corrects the issue) then I think your right, it could be NAS delay.

Do what I did. Test the situation. I left the DATA on my NAS, Copied the folders to the external, and then pointed it to the external in the DVR UI and then restarted the clients. You can test and go back and forth pretty easy.

I Love Synology. They sort of stuck it to me with the MPEG2 issue but in the end, the Synology boxes are a hair under powered. They do most stuff great but the Shield is way faster by far.

Throwing out my config as it may or may not be helpful. Everything works fantastic for me.

Channels DVR installed on Synology DS418play internal Seagate Ironwolf drive. Synology has 8gb of RAM.

Streaming boxes are all Apple TV’s except one Insignia Fire TV.

HDHomeRun EXTEND transcoder set to Heavy.

Everything all connected via cat6 except iPhones and iPad which are seldom used.

You mention your DS418 cannot transcode effectively - I think the standard model has a Realtek CPU, but the models that have either a "+" or "play" have Intel Celerons that do in fact hardware transcode. I have a 218+ with Celeron J that works pretty well as a server. I have a Shield as client-only for my main TV, and use a Firestick 4K at my other TV location - it works fairly well, and can easily go along with me on trips to remote view - best solution, too, as with the Silk browser, it can easily log in to wifi networks that require a web-based login, such as hotels etc.

I have the original "Miibox" from Walmart - it works but is under-powered. I've used the older pre-4K generation Firesticks and they seemed slow for Channels use also - I think it was not that they were not the 4K units, but rather that they were the previous generation. I have not tried the newest Google and Tivo streaming dongles but they sound like good client solutions for less than a Shield.

IIRC, the previous gen non-4K versions are stuck on an older FireOS, and not compatible with updates to the Channels app. The newer models (the older 4K, and those released at the same time as the new Lite model) have an updated OS, and improved processor.

Thanks for the update AND link. I will try the direct attached USB drive. Truth be told I may not need to archive very many shows. It's just nice to have the option.
As to the Synology NAS, yes I am delighted with it. Unfortunately it just doesn't have the processing power for this app.

Tim

It sideloads fine, and runs well on the old ones. The general usability of everything else is very slow. I've debloated it some to try and improve that, but in the end, it's in the guest room our cats inhabit, and doesn't get used any.

Note, fire tv stick has an Ethernet adapter, works well for me

you can add one yes, doesn't come with one.
