For the android app its annoying when I try to kill pip I cannot. I have to kill the app, then open it again and close again to kill PIP. can PIP be killed when app is closed?

DID you try long pressing home .. I know on FireTV this brings up the option to close PIP or Maximize it.

Yes, and I tried killing the app by double long press home.
On SHIELD it shows a banner on the home screen that lets you dismiss the PIP
