Interestingly I found a similar issue using the steamlink app which was fine previous to firmware update. With debug on, I can see it's using h264 and the display latency sits at around 30ms after a fresh reboot then after about 5 mins just starts climbing and dropping frames. Eventually the intermittent black screens appear.
Assume the decoder is broken in latest firmware as suggested?
