apparently it screwed up my external drive files wont playback that have been recorded . ARG apple! having issues with the server. too
ok , external DriveI hade Left connected using as my DVR only connected to 2018 mac mini while updating to 12.3.1 , I connected drive to an old macmini 2010 has mac os High Sierra on it . The external drive works fine copies files . so what the heck apple ! so beware everyone .
What format is the external volume? Can you check via "Get Info" or Disk Utility?
Sorry you're experiencing the issue. Thanks for the heads up.
Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
All was fine . then updated and then drive went unresponsive, i could see files but cant open them , rebooted a couple times still same issues.
and like i said i plug it into an old imac 2010 and drive is fine , I copyed files over to a new drive that is also Mac OS Extended (Journaled) not plugged in while updating and its working fine.
really seems is apple OS problem ... mounts fine on an old mac mini with High S. i unplug it move it to new os on other mac mini . it wont even mount. odd .
That is the OLD Apple Files system.
Since Big Sur, they use APFS.
As each new OS version is pushed, support for the old Mac OS files system seems to be less.
I have since copied all data off the drive , reformatted it to APFS copied back over . its all working now .
but c'mon apple . thats not good if external drives formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and they stop working on new os.
The old file system (HFS+) also called Mac OS Extended (Journaled) is from 1998 and is not good for ssds that are in use today in all modern macs since 2015 models.
APFS replaced the old filesystem and has been introduced in 10.13 High Sierra release in 2017, and became mandatory default for the OS with Big Sur (OS 11) 2020.
5yrs is the lifespan for support of Apple things, and no surprise for the now End of Life / obsolete file system to begin to show compatibility issues with current release software versions.
From a brief webs search, it seems, as of Big Sur, HFS+ is no longer supported or even an option to format drives in, for Time Machine use anyway. Don't see much on just for normal external drive use.
Apple users have had plenty of time to update...and developers updated their software to support APFS some time ago.
Its the Apple way.
Edited to correct release information.
