Learning Curve

Hello all! I received my HDHR Prime earlier in the week and picked up a cablecard at the local Xfinity store yesterday and I had everything up and running (HDHRPrime, Channels DVR on a spare Windows 7 laptop and two ATV4Ks) within an hour.

So, that leads me to some questions. Most of these are simple and part of my learning curve, but I hope to shorten that by learning from all of you.

  • Recording Priority - Can I set scheduled recording to take priority over live?

  • Tuner Conflict - When scheduling recordings (either manually or via a pass), can I get a notification if I have over-subscribed my 3 tuners?

  • Releasing a tuner - This may be an HDHR issue, but I had 3 concurrent recording scheduled for 7pm last night. Two went fine but the third failed. We wer enot watching live TV at the time, so I am not sure why the third failed. When I look at the HDHR log I see thisā€¦

At 22:14:48 I tuned one ATV to WMAQ to test it. I see that on tuner 2. I donā€™t see a ā€˜channel closedā€™ message for that, so was that tuner still considered in use even though the recording was almost two hours later? I suspect that I caused the problem, but Iā€™m not sure what I need to do to avoid it. If I put the ATV to sleep with that close that steam?

  • IOS App - I have the IOS app on my iPhone and iPad and i donā€™t see the DVR or Recordings links, only On Now, Guide and Settings. I swear that I saw it earlier. Any thoughts?

Iā€™m sure that I will have more questions, but thatā€™s it for now.

Thanks!

Cool!

Thereā€™s no way to do this at the moment.

There are no notifications, but surfacing conflicts is something weā€™re thinking about.

Please open the DVR on your laptop and look at itā€™s Log instead. It will show exactly what happened when it tried to record.

It does look like tuner2 was never released by the Apple TV. If you put the ATV to sleep it will disconnect, but if the ATV is still on and only the TV is turned off then it will not release the tuner.

This usually means the network/wifi is flaky. Try opening the app on iOS and then uncheck and recheck the bonjour checkbox on the DVR web UI on the laptop.

Got it. Please consider this a feature request

OK. This would be great! Our Layer3TV DVR did this so we are used to it.

OK. Iā€™ll grab that in a bit.

Thatā€™s what I suspected. Weā€™ll have to make sure to put the ATVs to sleep.

Hmmmā€¦ When I noticed it I was 5 ft. From the wifi router  It is the same on my iPad and iPhone. I will try the bonjour check box in a bit.

I got busy over the weekend and didnā€™t check the DVR log. This morning it looks like those events are not available in the log. Is there a way to see older events? If not, no worries. I can check it if it happens again.

In order to prevent this going forward I added a step in the power off sequence on my Harmony remote to switch the ATV back to the home screen. So far it looks like it releases the tuner when that happens.

I unchecked and rechecked the bonjour checkbox and this seems to have cleared this up. I am sitting 5 ft. From the wireless router and it is working. I will try it it different parts of the house during the day.

One more thing: On ATV I can see guide info out a few days, but on IOS it only shows a few hours. Is that expected? I would have thought that they would be the same.

Use http://127.0.0.1:8089/log?n=5000

Should be the sameā€¦ this would happen if it the app was downloading guide data from SD instead of the DVR. Try restarting the app (click Home twice and swipe up).

Thanksā€¦

Here is that section of the DVR log. I copied my testing prior to the event (at 19:00)

I restarted the IOS app on my phone and iPad and the guide is now the same as my ATVs.

Thanks!

This confirms that your ATV did not release the tuner. With your new harmony setup that shouldnā€™t happen again.

Thanks!

I am also looking at picking up a second HDHR Prime just in case  We have three time slots during the week where three shows are being recorded so having more tuners available is probably a good idea.

I wish the 6 tuner version was available now!

I always recommend N+1 . If your max shows is 4-5 at once, then 3 primes would be recommended (9 tuners).

In your case with 3 at once, 2 primes would cover the issue if the ATV does not release a tuner or the situation that I mention below.

This is not as big an issue as it was before tuner sharing was enabled for the Channels DVR. The problem in the past was during sweeps that many channels/networks play games with the scheduling. Some shows start/end at times not within the regular ā€œblockā€ that they shouldā€¦ (example: Channel A has a show that is normally 1 hr that starts at 9:00pm but during sweeps starts at 9:05 and ends 10:15. If you had back to back recordings on three channels this would mess up the third recording that should be at 10:00pm since the tuner is still in use.

Yeah, I hate when they do that! Also, Sunday evenings are interesting because CBS sometimes delays shows because of football.

I went through all of our regular recordings and the max is 3, but then fill the tuners I have now so if we are not watching a recorded show we would have to watch something via streaming. Not a big deal, but we had the ability to record 6 shows at once with Layer3, so it is an adjustment. A second Prime with 3 more tuners will be fine. Silicon Dust announced a 6 tuner Prime at CES, but it is not expected to ship until mid year, and that is only if it is on schedule.

I set up an ending padding of 60 min on the last CBS primetime show on Sunday. Use advanced pass on the Web UI. The iOS version only allows 15 min. Not sure about tvOS.

:grinning:

I used to do that on the Layer3 DVR. Football is pretty much over this year nut Iā€™ll try it out and remember t=it for next season.

Just a follow upā€¦

I picked up a second HDHR Prime on eBay and a second cablecard from the local Xfinity store and I now have 6 tuners! I did a stress test yesterday morning  I set up 5 shows to record and then tried to watch a 6th program from IOS and ATV (not at the same time) and it worked great!

Setting up the second Prime was easy and I just duplicate the channel line up, including favorites, before having Channels scan for the new tuner and it just worked

and so it beginsā€¦

One of the other features of the SD Tuners and Channels is that you can also mix and match devices. If you have channels that are NOT on cable and are available OTA, you can add an extend or connect and seamlessly integrate all into the same viewing systemā€¦Alsoā€¦ the bitrate on the OTA channels is usually better than cable since OTA do not compress/recode the stream as cable does. Also since Channels adheres to the SD tuner selection APIs, it will coexist with MOST other items that use SD Tuners the DLNA and SDs view only softwareā€¦ [stay away from Plex using the SD tuners since Plex does NOT honor the Tuner Selection APIs.]

Yeahā€¦ No OTA right now. Weā€™re too far from the Chicago stations to pick them up with an inside antenna. I may try an outside antenna once the weather warms up in the spring, but weā€™ll see.
