Light purple lines under each program in the guide grid

In the guide grid on iPhone/iPad/AppleTV there are light purple lines that run under each listed program. What are they for?

My first guess was that they represent progress in the program. Many extend to just under the now-dot in the timeline and would seem to express how much has been played.

But about half are at other lengths sometimes stretching a half hour into the future.

They look like download progress indicators but that would not be applicable as dozens of programs are not downloading.

What are they for?

That is exactly what they are for. The line represents the progress of the program within the current block.

Not quite. For programs that began at the start of the timeline this is true. For programs that stated earlier, or have larger durations, the progress meter will not align.

(For instance, a 2:30 movie which started 2h ago would should its progress line as 80% complete within the 30m block displayed in the guide.)

So, if the program is 3/4s played, the line will stretch to 3/4s of the visible program block. The lines do not refer to the time at all, but the percentage of the program that has been played. Okay. Thanks.

Correct.
