Linking servers? or transferring shows?

We are snowbirds and have channels set up in our two houses. We also have a VPN between the two premises, so we can very easily access resources in the other place. We have Apple TVs in both places. Each location works just fine in isolation.

We sort of wish there was an easy way to transfer shows from one instance to the other. The two are in different time zones and that's sometimes advantageous.

I realize that this is... not the average case.

Maybe I am misunderstanding the request. Why not just go to Settings: Channels DVR: Away From Home, and connect to the remote one?

It's actually (potentially) easier than that - I can use avahi on a raspberry pi to make each instance show up as "local" in the other place. One issue there is that the clients can get confused when they see two servers.

Even though that does work, the uplink bandwidth at both premises makes this... not great compared to playing stuff from the local NAS. It'd be better to be able to export/import a show before trying to watch it.

Seems to me you should be able to setup a cron job to run rsync every so often (once a day? once an hour?) to synchronize content between the 2 servers.

Set up a share on each server for the media folder

On the other server under personal media point to the appropriate TV and Movie folders. You are done if there is enough bandwidth

Well, so the question is... Is it sufficient to just dump video files into the TV hierarchy of the Channels volume?

No, that’s for Channels DVR Server use only, for recordings.

You would use the personal media feature to import local content from a folder on your computer.
