Locast Minneapolis

I got email from Locast, saying they now in my area....but channels says they are not still.

Locast is not available in Minneapolis.

I have not paid any attention to Locast, cause, they not useable if no service in my state..
Is it just as simple as putting in the Locast login account info Channels as with TVE and it works?

I would like to use Locast only for the few OTA channels that I have issues with via antenna.

Because of channel/guide mappings, each new city that Locast adds must be explicitly added to Channels.

If you kindly send the devs an email notifying them of your interest in Locast's new market, a DVR pre-release with support for the new market area will probably quickly find its way out.

OK. did that.

I discovered there is a Locast app...however, it does not work, says i am outside a Market they support and shows my IP address, however, it works fine on my laptop via their website.

Also, if they use IP address tied to account, then, how do they handle folks with Dynamic IPs?

I use CLoudFlare as Pri DNS, Google as Secondary, instead of my ISP DNS, but that cant be the issue, if it works fine on website, also any site i use the location or geo locate on, like G maps, it always hit right where i am on the map near exact. Does DNS affect geolocation tools used by locast?

Most likely they are doing geolocation based upon your IP. That is not affected by DNS.

There are several different libraries/services that provide location data based upon IPs, but I am not certain which one Locast is using.

Guess they have yet to update thier app i guess?
I sent them a help request reporting the issue.
But i hope Channels is able to login fine, when it gets added in at some point.

Also, i thought i seen in the threads here...somewhere, Locast is free with their adds inserted, but, Channels requires the paid version in order to work? is that correct?

Correct. The the ad insertion changes the stream and makes it unusable in Channels. Therefore, only Locast accounts that have made donations to the service are able to use Locast within Channels.

As far as I'm aware, the minimum donation requested that removes the ads from the streams is $5/mo ($60/yr).

The latest pre-release adds support for Minneapolis

Updated. Tried to add the account, get:

Your locast account cannot be used to stream without interruption unless you donate"

Guess it takes time for it to register as donate?

It started working...for a few minutes.
After tuning to a few channels, with the intention to go channel by channel to make sure they work, and compare quality....now i get nothing but "Stream not available".

Also, the couple channels that did work, wow, quite poor quality.
Lots of artifacts and also, very ghosty looking when there is motion.

Edit: ok, when i go to the locast website, it says you have reached max streams..um what? i am only using 1?? what gives.

Edit: o. seems they hate channel surfers.

Still, i am only using one device.....what kind of scam are they running, people pay for this kind of treatment....sigh. no way to remove limit it seems. I restarted Channels server, shut off my computer, even rebooted my router. cant stream any more. this won't do. if it hits stream limit so fast and easy, my mother sure will cause this every day. I also question if this limit would take effect if one was using Channels to Record on one of them and watching anohter channel.

Sounds to me like growing pains since they just launched today. Wait for things to settle down and re-evaluate.

I guess. but they don't even send a confirm email when u open a help ticket to acknowledge you even tried to contact them. :slightly_frowning_face:

Even so, the 3 channels that i manged to stream for a minute, yikes.
If it was free, ok fine, ....but having to pay for that low quality...and risk hitting a lockout when it does work, probably not going to be using this. I'll give it a couple days, my guess since its a "Donation" and not a actual purchase, there is no refunds.

( i realize that Locast IS free, via their site or own app, and that me having to pay the $5 was only needed to be able to use it in Channels DVR. I guess for those that absolutely can not get the stations via Antenna, Locast is better than nothing at all.)

But overall, so far, very poor quality service. Don't recommend this at all.
Maybe it just a launch day issues, and the quality will be better after a bit of time, but from what i have read, Locast is normally quite lower quality than TVE.

Working again...but, this is what i get for quailty of the harder to get OTA channles I was hoping to use locast for.

Markets - Locast_3_00.00.02

That is just terrible.
Even the HD source feed stations, are just a mushy mess.
Audio is out of sync on a few channels too.
I have reported the issues to Locast.
