Looking for Help: How to Record by Channel + Time Block (Not Show-Based) in Channels DVR

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to recreate a recording setup I previously had with my Dish Network Hopper, and I can’t seem to find a way to do it in Channels.

With Dish, I had my four main local channels set to record automatically every night from 7pm–10pm, 7 days a week, regardless of what shows were airing. This helped us discover new shows because anything in that time block would automatically be recorded, even premieres we didn’t know about.

I subscribed to Channels DVR for a year and even bought a Mac mini specifically because Google searches suggested that Channels could do this. But as I’m setting things up, the only option I see is Show Passes, which are title-based. Those don’t solve the problem because new shows that premiere in the spring or fall won’t record unless I already have a pass created for them.

Is there a way in Channels DVR to create a time-based, channel-based recurring recording, similar to “Record Channel X every day from 7–10pm”?

If so, where can I find that option? If not, is there a workaround?

Thanks in advance, I’d really appreciate any guidance!

OliveTin is one option, but there is also this Chrome extension that reportedly works well.

I understand what you are trying to do however, I think there is a much more elgegant way to do this. What I did was to create an advanced pass to record all series premieres on the 4 big networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, & FOX). See my screenshot. Basically I used a combination of air times, channel numbers, and tags to make this happen. You would obviously need to tweak channel numbers but this shoud allow you to get all new content without having to think about it. When you find a show that you want to continue to record you just create a pass for that show since this pass is limited to only episodes that meet the S01E01 criteria. Once you do that all subsequent episodes for that series will record as well.

Those are great tools, but they can only help to create a manual one-off recording, not a recurring one, like the OP asked for.

That gives me an idea to improve my extension to enable recurring recordings.
Added to my list of future improvements.

Check out the Advanced Passes section in this forum

Thank you, I set up this rule

I think you will be pleased. We find new shows to watch this way and quickly delete the stupid ones lol. Just dont forget to create a pass for the individual shows that you record beyond S01E01
