Losing connection to Homerun

Hi Eric and team,

My Channels on Apple TV occasionally loses connection to my HDHOMERUN quad tuner. Often it is due to power cut to the homerun or a network issue. However the Channels does not attempt to restore connection. If I return to the Channels menu and then choose a station again it works immediately. Is there any way to force Channels to reconnect to the homerun if it loses connection?

Cheers
Dan

Approx 20:44 UTC Monday, 4 July 2022 is when I last noticed the issue. I turned the TV on and Channels reported "Connection Lost". I have no idea when the connection to the Homerun was lost, nor what the cause of the loss was. I've checked the network and there are no issues I can find - wired connection stable and no power loss reported on router. I also checked the homerun logs, and there's no power loss or anything obvious:

(I've just assigned a static IP address to the homerun for future - in case that makes any difference)

Thanks for the info and the diagnostics. I see what you're saying about the "Connection Lost". Are both your HDHomeRun and AppleTV wired and connected to the same switch? You could be running into issues with flaky network cables.

We don't currently have a way to do that, partially because if we restarted the connection automatically we would lose the Live TV buffer that was there (which is sometimes what you would expect, but other times not). We're discussing how we could make it simpler to restart watching the same channel without having to hit the menu button and play again.

Homerun is wired, via an intermediate basic switch then into the router. Apple TV is wireless on network with multiple APs.

I'll try swapping out the ethernet cables. It's a long shot, but worth a try.

Ok, good luck with improving the experience. Cheers.

Is this a mesh network? Or multiple wired APs?

(Mesh networks are notoriously bad with HDHRs and Channels.)

Wired APs

I have had problems in the past where devices connect to a suboptimal AP, so I have just locked the Apple TV to the AP in the same room to make sure this is not a problem.

Are you able to wire the AppleTV? I would guess it would fix the issues.

I have a similar experience, the AppleTV reports poor signal quality from the HDHomeRun. Interestingly if I enabled tuner sharing via the Channels DVR it's rock solid.

Everything is wired, running at 1Gbps, and cable tested. It also only presents on the Connect device, not on the Prime's. :person_shrugging:
