M3u groups

Is there any way to automatically create/recreate channel collections from m3u groups? My channels are categorized nicely in my m3u editor but when channel numbers change I have to manually edit the channel collections on the channels side. It would seem to make sense to let those m3u groups come through to the UI

I used to have this problem when I used the option "Prefer channel-number from M3U" in the source definition. If you change it to "Ignore channel-number from M3U" and choose a starting number for the source, you shouldn't have this problem:

In this example, I decided that all channel numbers for this source will start at 5000.

I think that should help.

That's not idea. I have my groups with specific channel number ranges. Local 1-49, entertainment 50-350, sports 400-599, news 600-699, movies 700+. My channel numbers don't normally change but sometimes they do. The group name is already there and some clients do surface the group name into the client. It seems an obvious thing to do.

How are you assigning custom channel numbers (ie sports 400-599)? I'm assuming you have a couple of sources for sports channels, usually channels are assigned by the source (and grouped together via source, not category). I created a custom M3U that I fed back into my server, but it was time intensive.

What the devs will tell you is to let Channels DVR assign the channels numbers.
If you want to organize and group them, use Channel Collections.

If your m3u's have a unique channel-id per channel, just let Channels DVR assign the channel number and you won't have to edit your channel collections if the m3u channel number changes.

If your m3u's DO NOT have a unique channel-id per channel, you'll have to do what you're doing and edit your channel collection each time a m3u channel number changes.

Are you saying that if I add channels to the m3u, channels dvr will not change the number of the existing channels when the m3u is reloaded?

Yes. If each channel in the m3u has a unique channel-id and you let Channels DVR assign the channel numbers. Channels DVR remembers the channel number it assigns to each channel-id
