My mac mini M1 is currently running on MacOS 14.7 -- is there any benefit for updating the OS to a newer version as it relates to running Channels DVR Server?
For Channels no not really, but for security updates to the OS yes. You are a year behind on OS updates and the security and bug fixes. BTW I run 15.5 on my Mac mini.
Just not true, Apple is not Microsoft.
I'm not that concerned about security updates. The DVR server is behind a decent firewall and is used for nothing else. A friend has channels running on a 2014 mini on MacOS 12.7 with no issues. The attack surface is very limited. My question is related to functionality. It appears Channels does not currently employ any special OS related services on newer versions of MacOS that are not present in 12.7. ffmpeg and videotoolbox (and others) are items I'm wondering about.
If you're exposing this device to the Internet, even with a firewall, it is prudent to run the most up to date and recent version of macos. Not updating is very risky, and is downright silly with a device that is currently supported by the latest version of macos.
