Currently have my external USB connected to a Pi that I will be retiring soon and replace with a Mac mini. Will I be able to simply connect the existing external USB drive to the new Mac mini or is there a migration process required?
It depends on the format of the partition the recordings are on. The Mac supports exFAT (although, not as well as Windows or Linux) natively. Paragon offers pretty darn good FS drivers. (It's their NTFS code in the Linux kernel.)
I feel like I always eventually run into weird permissions issues on a Mac with drives that have non-Apple filesystem. I suggest buying a new external HDD, formatting it with the Mac's Disk Utility, and choosing whatever is the presently recommended Apple FS (which does seem to change every so often). Plug in the other drive and do a one-time copy onto the new disk then setup the server of the Mac (following the appropriate procedure to restore the transferred recordings to the new install).
The other advantage of this approach is if you screw something up, you can start over and try again.
