Moving from NUC to NAS?

I have channels DVR on an Intel NUC (i7) with some external drives attached. It seems a bit clunky to use--possible because I use my NUC for other things and I restart it or turn it off from time to time.

I am thinking about going to a NAS--but I want to make sure I get something with some horsepower so that it runs all the time and the TV runs smoothly and I can add storage as needed.

What is a good high performance NAS to switch to in 2023?

NAS and high performance dontvrealy go together. NAS tends to focus more on simplicity and reliability.

That being said. Most modern NAS can run CDVR with no problem including transcoding.

Synology is the most popular NAS brand and has tons of support.

However NAS tends to be overpriced for performance.

I use the Asustor Nimbuster NAS. It works good. If i where to do it again I would buy a 4 bay Synology.

Good website/youtube for NAS reviews.

Thank you! Which 4 bay synology? The 923+

Hi James,

Most consumer NAS have week CPUs. A desktop with a recent I3 will do a much better job at commercial skipping and transcoding if you watch remotely. You can install TruNAS and role your own NAS or run under the OS of your choice and get much better performance. If you want storage redundancy, you can mirror drives on any OS or set up RAID Z on TruNAS.

I cant argue about price vs performance on pc vs NAS. PC wins hands down.

But the advantages to NAS are its pretty much plug and play. Only decision you need to make is what size hard drive. They have a slick gui, with a walled garden app store. But you pay a lot more for less performance. They are less flexibleand more restrictive in what you can do. This makes them more secure because theres not as many settings or stuff for consumer to **** up.

Diy. Less money but more work. Picking hardware, setting up truenas, raid, dealing with linux. If it breaks you dont have dedicated tech support. But far more flexible, expandable.

There are benefits to both. But any modern 4 core NAS will be able to keep up with comskip and transcoding for a household.

As far as NAS recommendations. Buy the most expensive synology in whatever your budget is.

Festures I like.
NVME slot for cache drive
4 cores +
4 bay plus. Then setup Raid 5 or otner preference.
Synology is kost popular, so theres more native support.

IIRC the new 923+ models didnt do well with transcoding due to the processor change. The older models actually worked better.

Obviously verify, but its something to consider. My Synology DS920+ has done a good job
