Multi Purpose NAS

Hey guys… thanks for the advice on the HDHomeRun EXTEND vs. CONNECT. I purchased the extend and absolutely love the Channels app. I’m running it on three ATV’s and from the picture quality to the top shelf feature… I am very happy! My two week old Tablo is going back to MicroCenter this weekend.

I need your help in purchasing a NAS device. Here are my goals:

  1. Channels DVR to record the evening newscast. I do the weather on the CBS station here and want to see my newscasts. I’ve got Hulu No Commercials and Netflix so I don’t need to record every network show, etc. Skipping commercials is not a top priority for my Channels DVR.

  2. I want a place to store pictures from our iPhones.

  3. I want to store old Mini DV videos of the kids. Even better I’d like to figure out how to watch them on my ATVs. I thought maybe Plex would allow me to watch these old videos. Thoughts?

Thanks everyone. Looking forward to your knowledge and experience on this awesome app!

How much space are you looking for? And yes, Plex would let you watch those videos. I have a Synology NAS, but the QNAP’s are good, too, but if you’re just looking for a very basic NAS the WDMyCloud might be more up your alley.

Infuse is a nice app that lets you watch videos from a network share on apple TV. There are others too, VLC, etc. I found Infuse while researching how to play .ISO DVD images on iOS/Apple TV.

I use infuse pro to watch Nas videos. There is a one time per version or annual fee but it is easy to use, has a nice interface, plays almost anything and offers good performance. I’ve tried some others (MRMC and Plex) but this has been the best fit for a family friendly Appletv setup.
