Multiple Engines?

Not to be too greedy… … And I understand that this may not be available initially… But are there plans for, and if so, will the DVR have the ability to have multiple engines on the local network? Any thoughts on how that may be implemented?

  • Priority list/failover (by default use primary engine1, otherwise any other)?

  • Selection of which engine to use if multiple detected for record?

  • listing recordings from multiple engines if detected?

What is your use case for multiple DVR engines?

Not urgent or anything… Getting the 1.0 engine out the door should be priority… Something for 2.x +

Primarily it would be as a “backup”. If the main engine either runs out of disk space or becomes offline it would be nice to not miss a recording… I realize that your engine can autostart and I do have UPS for the critical devices…

Secondarily it would allow the distribution of the storage load among other devices for archiving allowing the less/rarely watched items an “always on/available” feeling.

I may end up having multiple devices compatible win the engine with anywhere from 500gb (my current testbed) to other various storage spots (planning on using an 8tb WD EX2 for ChannelsDVR) to my main “biggun” QNAP (used for archiving various device images but no unneeded “features” currently enabled on it; only file access and iscsi). I am using the SDDVR with the original 4TB+8TB external for archiving WD nas but that one is not compatible with ChannelsDVR plus it is quickly running out of space and the SDDVR engine has to manually be restarted every so often…

As a Systems analyst/consultant/disaster recovery you would not believe the scenarios that I have run into where “if only we had a replica/backup/second system ready” items come along after the fact or when they ignore recommendations and then get into problems…

Example: I also have 1 prime sitting in a box that has only been opened and tested just in case one of the other 4 failed or if I suddenly need more tuners than 4 primes (which is what I thought when I had 2)…

Hi @TeddyR …glad to see you did join. Think you will really enjoy the fantastic experience on Channels DVR. It’s no wonder that ?ickk requested limitation to SD DVR discussions on the SD tvos thread (however it will also sell tuners, so why?, jealous maybe?). Channels has the killer DVR!

Another use case for multiple engine might be 2 adult household members with very different viewing habits. Each could enjoy their own setup.

Perfect candidate might be @d21mike.

SDs primary “bread and butter” is hardware tuners.

What the tuners are used for probably doesn’t matter… SDDVR, ChannelsDVR, PlexDVR or the various other software out there that can use them, no matter what, SD sells more tuners…

It was understandable that they would want their forums for their hardware/software only. The same way that Channels probably does not want anything on here about SD software that does not pertain to firmware issues (which affects them).

Most of us tried to make sure the comments were relevant to both in that other thread or clarify misconceptions… but those sometimes can get out of hand (lots of anger out there)…

The SO loves channels and uses it for live tv all the time… Soon the DVR will be available and then I can REALLY have fun (and options) :smiling_imp:

@DebbieFL. Right. But I think I am leaning more towards User Profiles now. Hulu just announced they are coming out with User Profiles like Netflix. I thought multiple DVR Support would be easier to program and be mostly the same as User Profiles and I also had 2 DVR’s with my CABLE Company. I am doing ok now with only one since I also get some of my shows from Hulu with no commercials.
