A LONG time ago, I bought a HD Homerun Connect. I picked this over the Tablo because I didn't like how slow the Tablo was at changing channels due to its use of h.264 (compressing the video signal before serving it up).
Shortly after buying the HD HR, I bought the Channels app for my Apple TV and over the course of the next year or 2, I would fire up Channels to watch live TV and never really cared about DVR'ing anything.
My family and I enjoy watching the Olympics (despite NBC's horrific coverage and non-stop commercials but that's a whole different topic). So, my wife asked if we could record them. She knows that the Apple TV+Channels combo can pause the live feed but she wanted to record them as well to mainly blow by the commercials and for times when we couldn't be in front of the TV.
I remembered that many MANY months ago, I played around with Emby and Plex's DVR offerings and both had some crummy playback issues. Things were so bad, I gave up on both. I tried Tablo for a while but the slow channel changing made me box it up and toss it in a storage bin.
Then.... a light went off and I remembered that Channels had a DVR component. I remember when it first came out and while I wasn't a huge fan of the $80/year price, I understand that this money goes into paying the salaries of the developers and support people so maybe it was worth it?
...... let me tell you....... it's worth it! Not to sound like some super fanboy but after trying the DVR offerings from Plex, Emby and Tablo.... for me, Channels DVR is hands down the best option among them!
The TV Everywhere option is really nice and the commercial skipping is right on the money as far as accuracy goes. I have my Channels app on the Apple TV set to automatically skip commercials and watching the Olympics (aside from NBC horrible coverage) is amazing, no complaints!
I'm running Channels DVR on my Debian 10 box (same box as Plex is running on) and tossed in a 2TB drive for it to store the recordings.
The point of my post is to let people know that if you're deciding between the DVR options I tested with, save yourself some time and just use Channels DVR.
