NAS Synology

Hi. Just switched from PC to Synology NAS. When watching outside the house it is glitching. slow and unwatchable. Sometimes it is live and recordings and sometimes live is good and just recordings. Any ideas on what settings i can play with? Ran troublshooting in channels and says all ok.

What version NAS are you using? Also, what do you have your streaming services set to in your client (assuming you are using a client to connect remotely and not via web)?

If the NAS is an AMD version, you don't get hardware transcoding which may impact the performance.

Not sure where to find what my streaming services are set to in client.
Here' my NAS

OS Synology DS223
linux
(kernel: 5.10.55+)

CPU

4 cores / Cortex-A55

load averages: 2.18 2.66 2.09

RAM

29%

Your CPU doesn’t have enough power to transcode a stream. I would suggest returning the NAS if you can if you want remote streaming. If that isn’t an option change your client settings under playback quality to use original on all three options, home, internet, and cellular.

What he said. In the client (assuming on your phone or tablet), got to the menu on the right, go down to settings, look for playback, and adjust under streaming quality.

thanks, can you recommend a 2 drive NAS?

Thanks everyone!!

If I get the new NAS can i just swap the drives?

Not sure and never tried. I'm sure there are plenty of articles on the web about upgrading NAS and appropriate steps to take.

Check the Synology Support website. Depends on which models and what architecture of each.

Depends on how things are setup.
DS224+ is great. If possible, always make sure to update and get additional memory for the system.
I added 4GB or ram to my ds220+
I would suggest the ds225+ but they removed transcoding. I'm seen where it can be put back but the ds224+ is the best.

thanks DS224+ it is.

Another option, use an inexpensive mini PC as your Channels DVR server and point to your NAS for it's storage. Works great! The Beelink MINIS13 is very popular here uses very little electricity and costs about $200.

Am I reading this correctly, is Synology is back to using Intel processors? I've been wanting to move from a 2-bay 720+ to 4-bay NAS for a while but held off because of transcoding concerns.

This is like a new NAS being manufactured in 2025? I read something about Synology forcing branded drives. Can I continue to use my WD Reds? I am out of the loop and I'm having trust issues with web search results.

Never mind, I found my answer in another post. PSA: New Synology NAS models no longer support hardware transcoding
