New Categories

This is an odd request, and falls under many varying categories. I would like to propose a new category (whether top-level or under Playgrounds is debatable) for "Containers".

The forum has become rather encumbered with posts about various aspects of containers and Channels. Whether this means running Channels in a container, or how to integrate other containerized projects into Channels, the goal is the same: to keep like discussions together.

(The newest security update regarding containers using bridged networking on certain iptables installations has brought this to the forefront. However, the pervasiveness of certain container-related issues that flood the forum detract from its overall helpfulness.

Personally, I would have created this new forum ages ago, but my moderator privileges have been revoked. Whether it was because I was uncomfortable having access to as much information about other users, or because I offended others with my posts, the result was the same: I cannot do this on my own by fiat, and thus require the works of others.

A hopeful and beneficial side effect of such a new category could be the implementation of requirements for posting, to hopefully alleviate the effects of copypasta and its ensuing problems.

For instance, projects would not just give a random command line to use, but rather:

  • Container
    • Registry
    • Host
    • Image
    • Tag
  • Volumes
  • Environment

When provided in such a manner, users are less likely to simply copy-and-paste random commands, and instead should understand what they're doing.

I've created the Hosting category with these sub categories: General, Containers, and Virtual Machines.

Are users allowed to post new topics there?

Hmm. I think it was me that deleted it. I was confused and didn’t notice your point was to put it in that new category.

I deleted it as a dupe. We don’t like dupe threads, especially when they’re related to ongoing issues.

I made it a locked thread attempting to direct docker users to read the security announcement.
