New channels feature of hardware transcoding h264 -significance?

Just noticed that in the latest version for tvOS there is a mention of hardware transcoding of h264 video.

What’s the significance of that on the Apple TV? Haven’t really noticed any issues with the current setup thus far so not sure what benefit this brings…just curious

Note I’m in Australia so DVR not available for us yet.

For progressive H264 channels, we are now using a hardware decoder available in tvOS 10.2

You should not notice any difference. The hardware decoder is more efficient, so it means the ATV uses less CPU and produces less heat.

Is interlaced H264 out of luck on hardware decoding? All my H264 channels are 1080i or 576i. 720p is pretty much non-existent in the UK.

The hardware decoder on iOS/tvOS does not support interlaced content. We’ve been in touch with Apple about this (rdar://30669495), and their response was:

Correct and intentional. Please stop using interlaced video.

So yes, out of luck.

:joy:
