New Raspberry Pi, same external hard drive

I have purchased another Raspberry Pi so I can setup some more services for our home. This new Pi is the 2GB version, and my existing one running Channels DVR Pi image is 4GB. Since the 4GB is overkill for Channels DVR, I want to swap it over to the new 2GB Pi and use the 4GB for the new services. Can I simply just connect my external drive to the new Pi and it will work, or do I need to do a true backup and restore?

Make sure the new Pi has latest bootloader, and then you can just move the USB and boot.

Will do, I still have the SD card from the last one I was gonna use. Thanks for the quick response as always!
