New to Channels..Probs watching Live TV & Recordings

I am a new Channels DVR user. I am using an HDHomeRun Quatro, Channels DVR server app running on my HTPC
Also using a FireTV 4k stick HDMI plugged into my HT Receiver out to the TV. All devices are connected via e-net except the FireTV which is wifi connected to the same network. The FireTV has the Channels DVR client installed on it.
When I try to watch live TV on the HDHR/Channels DVR client, through the Guide, I see "hiccups" during the program. The "timeline" pops up and a circular arrow rotates for a second or 2 and the video/sound jumps. This happens on all 4 tuners on the HDHR. The same thing happens when I playback a recording from any of the HDHR 4 tuners on the server/PC.
I can go the the actual saved file on the PC, watch it there and it plays without a problem. I can watch programs using the HDHR windows app on any of the 4 tuners with no issues there either.

Is your client connected wirelessly? Is your server? It sounds like the problem you're having is that your network cannot keep up with streams.

Remember, streaming OTA TV streams is quite different than streaming video like Netflix: OTA streams are roughly 5 times the size of Netflix streams.

The best solution is to make sure everything is wired.

the issue here will be the fireTv4k .... it requires very specific settings to make it work well if at all! and there are lots of known issues with interlacing (1080i) and fireTv drivers causing glitches and crashes...

for firetv in my house i set transcoding to hardware and force everything to be transcoded at 720p that seems to fix everything as the fireTV can handle that

AppleTV 4k works great. and can be hardwired gigabit. Its probably bigger than a Fire stick, but still pretty small, I have all my AppleTVs taped to the back of my TVs, aka: they are not visible.

You can also get ethernet adapters for the Fire Sticks for about $10-15. It may only be a 100Mbps connection, but that's more than enough for a client device.

Please submit diagnostics from the app after noticing the issue.

The app should be set to Home Streaming Quality: Original.

The interlacing issues mentioned above don't affect you since you are not in the UK.

I have an older FireTV Gen 3 I think..anyway it has e-net capability. I installed it in place of the FireTV 4K.
The same issues showed up during playback. I reinstalled the 4K stick after testing.

My FireStick 4K works just fine with the ChannelsDVR.

The single biggest factor is having as much bandwidth to the DVR server as possible.

My Channels DVR server is a fairly old Mac Mini (2012) and it stores the recordings on an external USB3.0 drive. But I have a gigabit Ethernet connection to my router, which is an 802.11AC model. When I run a speed test from the FireStick to the DVR server I get >300Mb/s.

In fact, I upgrade my router to an AC model, because with the older N model, I was getting only ~30Mb/s with the speed test and the ChannelsDVR experience poor (took forever to jump forward/back and would get the choppy playback behavior you describe).

When you run the speed test from the ChannelsDVR app on the FireStick, what kind of numbers do you see?

Set Home Streaming to Quality. i am curious about this setting. could I get a brief explanation of what it does and how it could effect the problem I am having.

Ran Speed Test - 106.83 MB/S

It transcodes the stream to a lower bitrate, which will then use less bandwidth. So if your wifi is unable to handle the bandwidth of the original stream, you can reduce the rate until you find something that works.
If you device is having issues running the transcode, though, there is very little processing to do if sending the original stream... so this will avoid issues where the device doesn't have enough processing power.

My apologies to all for now responding in a timely manner. I have been testing over several evenings of recording and playback. I also added the e-net dongle for the FireTV 4K stick during this time.

With change to the setting and the e-net dongle addition, I have not seen any more of the "hiccups" in playback.
