New User - DVR not working right

Hello,

I set up Channels a couple of days ago. I've recorded 4 shows thus far and tonight I just tried to watch 2 of my recordings. When trying to play them back, they play for a minute then freeze showing the TV Show image with a wheel circling. I stop the playback and restart it. It doesn't pick up where it froze but does a little bit ahead of where it froze. Then it would freeze again after a minute, sometimes only seconds have gone by. At first I attributed it to just something wrong with this show, so I started another show and the same behavior occurred.

Running Windows 10, using the 64 bit installer. I navigate to Channel using my Google Chrome browser. I didn't have this issue with WMC or more recently the HDHomeRun DVR. Any insight?

Can you try opening the mpg file with VLC to see if it plays back correctly.

More info. I navigated to where my recordings are stored > TV > TV Show name and played the *.mpg video file using the default Win10 "Movies and TV" application and I didn't experience any of the freezing as before. So it doesn't appear to be an issue with the recording itself.

tmm1, ask you requested I also was able to play the video without issue using VLC

Can you copy/paste the OS/CPU info from the top of the DVR settings web page? Further down what does it say for the Transcoder setting?

The transcoder is set to Hardware and the deinterlacer is set to blend. Here are my specs:

Are there any errors shown on the DVR Log tab?

Try switching to Software transcoding to see if it helps.

I'm definitely getting some dropped packets. This is where I switched from live tv to watch a show called The Enemy Within. The log starts where I end live TV on channel 720. Interesting though, you can see in the log where I attempted to delete the show after I felt it was corrupt, but the recording was still on my hard drive so I could test it via VLC or "Movies and TV." I will switch to software encoding. My hardware specs should suffice hardware recording, but I will give it a try.

This is unexpected. I see your NVIDIA card is being used for transcoding and it's possible that is the issue. Try Software mode to see if the problem persists.

I've set it to software mode and will get back to you. I noticed that permission denied error and was curious about that. Is there a setting that could be changed?

You could check to see if there is any NVIDIA driver update available.

After switching to software encoding I'm getting artifacting, live video switches from actual video footage to black and back and forth and sometimes to either verticle or horizontal random color lines, mainly green. I updated my Nvidia drivers and no help. Going back to hardware encoding. I'd really hate to go back to the HDHomeRun DVR because I really hate the UI and especially since there is no grid guide. I'd rather pay more for a service that works as expected rather than dealing with a UI I really don't like but works. If we can't get recordings to play properly, I'm going to have to cancel this subscription.

Are you still seeing "Permission denied" messages in the Log with Software transcoding?

What kind of filesystem is being used on your H:\ drive?

I'm really surprised that software transcoding was giving you issues too. If a similar permission denied message is occurring, and deleting recordings is not removing the mpg file from the disk, then that would indicate some sort of filesystem issue. What kind of drive are you recording to?

I'm not getting the "permission denied" error any more. The file system is NTFS. The drive is a 2TB ST2000DM001-1ER164 which is a Seagate drive. See link below:

It looks like your cable channels are coming in as h264, so there will be some differences between playing content from local network channels (NBC, CBS, etc) vs cable channels.

Were you seeing the software encoding glitches when watching live tv or a recording? From a cable channel or local network?

my tuner is the HDHomeRun Prime 3 cable card tuner. All my channels come thru this. I was watching live TV when I saw the glitches using software encoding. The channel I've been watching today have been FS1 and TBS, which are both cable channels.

Just started using a new NAS capable of hardware transcoding/de-interlacing and am seeing some of the same issues.

Appears on H.264 channels using an HDHR Prime while watching Live TV.

It starts remuxing, but get the spinning buffer circle.

If I pause it and slide the progress bar ahead a sec or two and then play it will glitch until I pause and play again. Then good.

Don't see it on mpeg2 channels.

Looks like a sync problem with the PTS time code or a reference frame issue.

P.S. Using latest Firefox browser on a Windows PC attached to same switch as the HDHR Prime and Channels DVR NAS. Just trying Live TV, so haven't tried playing back recording from the Channels DVR NAS yet in the browser.

Try to force the bitrate lower to force it to transcode instead of remux.
