Noob question

My first post on this forum. Just installed the Channels DVR last night and have my first recording (haven’t watched it yet, so can’t tell if there were any problems). My question relates to the Apple TV 4K.

Will the scheduled recordings take place if the Apple TV is in sleep mode? Last night, I did not put it in sleep mode because I was not sure it would record if in sleep mode. Also, I have noticed that the Apple TV 4K comes back on by itself a few seconds after I put it in sleep mode. I think this has been happening ever since I installed the Channels App and the Channels DVR. Does either one turn on the Apple TV if it is in sleep mode?

Recordings are done on the device you have the DVR set up on. It does not matter if Apple TV is on or off.

As @TricBox said, DVR functionality happens 100% on the computer/nas it is installed on. The Apple TV app is just a client. It just communicates with the Channels DVR server.

As for the weird sleep issues, not only does Channels DVR not do anything to wake up your Apple TV, this functionality isn’t even possible. There’s nothing third party apps or services running on other computers can do to sleep, wake, or even communicate directly WITH the Apple TV. Only apps running on the Apple TV, and while open and running, can communicate externally. Like iOS, tvOS is very much locked down.
