Nvidia shield losing storage

Nvidia shield running channels DVR with Samsung 500 gib USB drive For removable storage. I do a lot of recordings and it keeps filling up my internal storage Nvidia shield told me it’s the meta-data that’s doing it not sure what that is. I have Channels DVR on external Drive. My question is under basic settings,
on the server enabled, it says /Storage/emulated/0 Where should that Be going to and how do I list it as. I would like to stop this box from locking up already had one run out of storage could not even get into it had to get another one.thank you so much.

Keep in mind Shield (as a server only) is not really supported by Channels anymore, but it does still work. I have one that I use as backup test unit.

If you un-select the Server Enabled, then select the location field, you should see your storage locations. My external storage shows up like the following and I use a folder named dvr.
/storage/2436AEE636AEB7E6/dvr

emulated/0 is the internal shield storage.
You need to either change the directory to your external drive, or format your drive on the shield to be used as expanded interal storage.

Expanding your internal storage is the better option performance wise, but it will render the drive useless away from the shield

Thank you all for helping me.so is the right way to list it is

/mnt/500gb-usb-drive/dvr

is this correct does it have to be in capital letter

or /storage/500gb-usb/dvr Really don’t know what to enter

You don't enter manually it should appear on the list when you click ...

It only gives me a bunch of folders

Then maybe you setup your drive as adopted storage not external.

We don't recommend or provide technical support for these setups as they are not reliable. If you want a working DVR I would advise you move away from the shield.

Although the Shield seems like an ideal server, since it is small, quiet, economical to operate, and an excellent client; Android is subject to major updates causing the server to fail. That happened to me, so I moved my server to a small Windows computer, but they support several other operating systems. Fortunately for me, I only used my external drive on the Shield as compatible storage, so I could easily move the server data files completely intact and use a simple restore to recover my server data.

I wouldn't use the Shield as a server for anything really. It's a poor man's game console with Android built in to it. As a client tho, it's a great machine

Mini-rant.

The Nvidia Shield is OLD, antiquated these days. 5yrs old now.
It has NOT had a OS updates in over a year.
Even then, they have had only a few updates since launch in 2019 (2nd gen).
Maybe 1 update every year. They continue to have un-resolved bugs that have existed for several software versions.

It currently runs Android tv ver 9.1.1. Current Android tv/Google tv version on other devices is 13 or 14.
The last Security patch level for the Shield TV is April 5, 2022.

For a $200 device(Pro model), that is not acceptable, even more so, that it is STILL sold new today.

When you can buy a ~$50 device (ChromeCast with GTV or that new ONN Pro) that is up to date, and gets active updates. It shows that Nvidia has decided to no longer invest in and support their product.

Even as a CLIENT device, it sucks, imo. For Channels DVR client use, have only minimal issues with.

But other things, like trying to stream videos form my Plex server (hosted on a PC), the Plex app has tons of issues with vids not playing direct, and need transcode. And many crashes and slowness.

While since i switched to Apple TV, has had 2 new gens of hardware and monthly software updates since i bought my 2019 Nvidia Shield Pro.

There is no "Infuse Player Pro" for Android, but millions of random ad filled "players" that need in app payments to even enable basic features, just to play a video.

I just can not recommend the Shield as a streaming box anymore. Especially since the Apple Tv is now cheaper.

I thank everyone for telling me my shield is junk lol. I do have a computer I don’t use anymore it looks to have enough space and ram. I just have to learn how to set it up for it. I use channels dvr to watch and record live tv from hd home run and dish network. Can I still use nvidia as a client? I do have to onn $20 boxes they work great as clients.Seriously I thank everyone for giving me advice I am having fun trying to learn how do this stuff. Im a diesel mechanic trying to learn this cool stuff.

Not junk....just getting old and suffering from a lack of attention from Nvidia. It still has support for some codecs no-one else has, and I can see a difference with their AI upscaling. That being said, I agree that it wouldn't be replacing mine should it die.

It says 9.1.1 for "android tv SW version"

Still is from 2022.

That's their SHIELD code id. Look up a bit under 'Version'....that's the base Android TV release.

Thats stupid thinking on their part. It just says "version" should be their version. The line that states "Android TV version" is what you would think is the actual "android TV version". And custom roms for android devices, the actual version of the OS is where it say "Android version".

Lol, anyways, still is a old OS. and with 15 coming out soon, at some point, it will be too old to run current apps on. My point still stands.

It used to be the BEST Android based streaming box out there. In a few niche ways, it still is. (mainly with raw connectivity ie usb ports). But tech has advanced more since it was made, and there are alternatives now. But as far as it being a server, it has been junk for sometime now, thanks to the 9x version software update.
