My Unraid server has crapped the bed and I cba to start again. Thinking of getting a cheapo NAS and using one of my shields as the Channels DVR server. I've seen some comments about transcoding being an issue with drive speed. I was thinking of using the NAS to record to, but putting an SSD on the Shield to use for transcoding. Can this be done? I work away a lot so reliable transcoding is important.
Why not run channels on the NAS?
Thinking of getting a 220j, won’t be powerful enough for transcoding afaik
My setup is:
OS: TrueNAS core 13.1
CPU: AMD FX4100 quad core
Ram: 16 Gig
drives are only 5400rpm
DVR server runs in it's own jail and all recordings are stored outside the jail. Server uses software transcoding as I've not been able to figure out how to pass the GPU (GTX1650TI) to the server jail.
Main client is Shield Pro.
My brother in Wisconsin accesses the server by web UI and doesn't have any problems with viewing remotely (Server is in Washington).
I really think your transcoding and smoothness of remote viewing would be effected more by the upload bandwidth available for the server to use as that is what will determine your remote connection speed from the server.
At least that is my understanding but I may be wrong and if I am I hope someone corrects me.
You can just istall the DVR on the Shield, you know. It worked for me for years although I'm in the process of testing alternatives like moving the DVR to a NAS. But the first option will get you up and running fast.
