Occasionally stops opening streams. Requires ATV reboot

I’ve noticed that recently Channels will just stop connecting to any stations occasionally and just never get past loading any channel. Manually closing and reopening the app (not just exiting and coming back) doesn’t change anything. I’m able to stream to other apps & devices. Restarting the AppleTV fixes the problem every time.

HDHomerun Extend (transcoding enabled) / ATV4 tvOS11 / Wifi / Also have Plex DVR on the network (only using 1 of the 2 tuners at most).

@CJSchmidt:

WHen saying 1 of 2 tuners, do you mean devices or tuners on a device?

PlexDVR does not follow SDs API for tuner selection (channels / Channels DVR / SDdvr/ SD apps do and can therefore coexist on the same network on a “first come/ first served” tuner selection model) . Plex OTH assumes that it has full access to all the tuners on a device and does not release the tuners for other platforms; which may lead to the symptoms you are seeing (as well as missed recordings/etc) *

  • A connect in these examples is a device with 2 tuners; an extend is a Device with 2 tuners, a Prime is a device with 3 tuners, a Connect Quattro is a device with 4 tuners.

What is the behavior you see when trying to load a channel? Does the video player show up? Does it have an error message? Is it showing the spinner?

Black screen with program info bar on the bottom and spinner in the center of the screen. Back out and try another channel and the same thing happens. No error message (at least within a minute or so).

Have you noticed anything strange before it starts doing that? Video player pauses or anything.

You could try clicking “scan network” on the Settings tab, in case your HDHR is changing IP addresses.

I meant tuners within a single device (Extend). This morning, Plex was using 1 tuner to record, but it has happened when nothing was recording.

This was my original assumption, but the fact that I was still able to stream channels on the HDHomerun app from my phone and that restarting the AppleTV fixed the problem seemed to indicate it was (at least somewhat) an issue with Channels instead of Plex.

Not that I’m aware of. I think it happens most often when someone first sits down to watch something, not while flipping around.

HDHomerun has a fixed ip on the network.

Please try the testflight beta build, and next time it happens click Submit Diagnostics at the bottom of the Settings tab (then post here so I can take a look at the logs).

Will do. Thanks!

Unable to stream this morning using beta. Left it trying to play for about 6 minutes. No error message, just black screen and spinner. Tried a few other channels and got the same thing. HDHomerun status shows that the tuner is changing when I switch channels. HDHomerun app on my phone is able to connect without any issues. Restarting AppleTV fixes it. Plex isn’t running.

Submitted “video player” & “other” logs.

Thanks guys!

Hmm. Can you try changing the transcode mode on the Settings tab of the app to Heavy or None?

If you open the web interface of the tuner, go to Tuner Status, does it still show the channel in use? Then if you select the tuner number, does the resource lock show an ip or none? [if an IP, is it the ATV IP, the DVR Server IP, or something else]

Looked at your logs again and I think the issue you’re hitting was fixed in the v3.0.2 of Channels.

Can you let me know if you see it again on that version?
