"On Now" Not Showing Up on ATV HD Top Shelf - SOLVED!

Have 2 Channels DVR servers, each with their own Plus account. Both connect to 2 HDHomeRun Primes with identical channel selections. All servers, HDHRs & ATVs are on the same network.

The client (4.5.8) on a ATV 4K shows "Up Next" & "On Now" on the ATV Top Shelf connected to a server (.0054) on a Win 10 NUC. Setting "Up Next in Top Shelf" is 'On'.

The client (4.5.8) on a ATV HD shows only "Up Next" on the ATV Top Shelf connected to a server (.0054) on a Nvidia Shield Pro. Setting "Up Next in Top Shelf" is 'On'. Missing "On Now" items

I have updated the ATV HD to the latest IOS release. Nada.
I have moved the client off the top row, restarted the ATV HD & moved the client back to the top row. Nada
I have accessed the other server from the ATV HD. Nada.

Out of options I can think of trying to fix this. H E L P P L E A S E

It barely works. It works when it wants to. Many threads in the past couple of years about it At this point, it is what it is. And honestly, it’s been working kind of ok for me.

If I remember correctly the issues it was having were due to the very tight memory limits Apple places on the Top Shelf stuff. Perhaps the older Apple TV has even lower limits that prevent it from doing On Now like the newer model can?

Two other apps on the top row show plenty of items. So I removed them, rebooted the ATV HD and still only getting 4 "Up Next" items being displayed but no "On Now" at all.

I then remove the client from the top row so no apps were showing anything, rebooted the ATV HD and moved the client back to the top row. Launch app. Takes a bit before showing anything. Still no "On Now" being shown......

The On Now comes from the favorited channels in the app.

Special Thanks - That Fixed It!!

Setting favorite channels in the lineup does indeed show On Now on the ATV HD. Interesting that I did NOT have to do this to have On Now show up on the ATV 4K.

Footnote: I left out of my overall description that I have a "Our Favorites" collection pushed to all clients. Maybe this is where the ATV 4K gets its On Now list?

I also noticed that the ATV 4K is in collections order while the ATV HD is not in a particular order. Will work this and update my results when done.

If you name the collection Favorites then it will work as you expect.

Super thanks!!!! Changing the collection name to "Favorites" did the trick!!!

Its now TRULY COMPLETELY WORKING

FINAL SOLUTION FOR ANDROID PHONE & ATV USERS:

This fixes two issues:

  1. "On Now" not showing collection channels on ATV Top Shelf
  2. "On Now" & "Guide" tabs not showing collection channels on Android (defect in app)

You need TWO Collections: 1 for Channels on Android and 1 for Channels on ATV

Create duplicate collections titled:

  • "Favorites" for use on your Channels app on ATV
  • "Favorite" for use on your Channels app on Android phone

On web>Clients>Client Settings>Global Client Settings>Server Side Only>Channel Collections - make sure BOTH collections are selected

Make sure your Channels ATV app & Channels Android app settings are as follows:
Channels ATV app: Settings>General>Live TV>Quick Guide: "Favorites"
Channels ATV app: Settings>General>Live TV>Channel Surfing: "Favorites"
Channels Android app: Settings>General>Live TV>Quick Guide: "Favorite"

And there is a second alternative to this final solution:

  • Instead of maintaining 2 collections, only have 1 named "Favorites"
  • On the server, click Settings>Clients>Client Settings>Choose a Setting to Override>Server Side Only>Channel Collections & click "Add Settings"
  • Select "Favorites"

And now both your Apple TV app & your Android app have everything set up
