This will be the 2nd new year's eve that I've been using TVE with Channels. Last year, I didn't expect the 30-or-so second lag watching the ball drop- the family wasn't happy.
Is there another option to get a real-time stream besides buying an antenna and watching via broadcast ?

Unless you are there, in Times Square physically, there's going to be some type of delay regardless. Our family did a zoom this year to "be together" and everyone had their TV's on watching. None were "live" in the same way despite everyone watching the same channel. My sister in the Bay Area (via cable) was off by ~1 minute compared to my mom on the East coast.
As others have mentioned there will always be lag. Internet streaming will be the most. OTA/cable card should be the least.
