I have an original HDHR ATSC tuner from at least 10 years ago. I know it’s not on the list of supported hardware, but it seems to work just fine. Any advantage to upgrading to a new connect or extend?
The Extend does transcoding, which can save space on your DVR. However, commercial detection takes about twice as long on H264 transcoded streams. And it takes just slightly longer when switching between transcoded channels, but this difference is negligible. The web-ui transcode is also slightly faster with straight mpg streams.
So the Extend will save space, but will decrease performance when transcoding. If your DVR has a powerful processor, the difference really doesn’t matter and the Extend is a better option. If not, the benefit of transcoding could be marginalized by the slower DVR hardware.
Thanks for the reply. I’ve setup my DVR on a linux VM with decent resources. I’m going to go ahead and try a new extend.
The older HDHRs are fully supported, and it’s no accident that it works just fine =)
