Original Quality Delivery

I found some posts talking about this and good explanations of Direct vs Stream. Does Direct cause the client inside the home on the same subnet as the Channels DVR computer and HDHomeRun to make a connection to the Channels DVR, or directly to the HDHomeRun? The computer I'm using only has a wifi and ethernet port, and I wanted to put the channels DVR <-> HDHomeRun connection on their own little subnet, but it will mean the clients can't get directly to the HDHomeRun. My Tmobile router doesn't allow Proxy ARP.

Right now I have the wifi and Ethernet port on the same subnet and have a script to delay the Ethernet port coming up until the wifi has its address. It is causing other problems on my network sometimes, and channels is complaining in the log that I have them both on the same subnet.

Just wanted to make sure that all connections to watch shows will use the IP address of the channels DVR and not try to directly connect to HDHomeRun.

Thanks

The default is to connect directly to the tuner. Changing from Direct to Streaming, or enabling Tuner Sharing will change it so connections go through the DVR server. The difference between Direct and Streaming is that "Direct" sends the raw Transport Stream straight to your client device, while "Streaming" transcodes (and buffers) the stream on the server and sends HLS streams to the client.

Neither setting will affect how your client device connects to the DVR server.

Original Quality Delivery is different than tuner sharing Streaming just means that the TV buffer will be held at the Server ... Direct the buffer will be kept at the device this feature is meant more for low storage devices to keep the buffer at the server.

While I have never used the Streaming setting, are you certain that the stream is not remuxed to HLS before being sent to client devices?

This is great, thank you. I know it doesn't affect how the clients connect, but when I had a different subnet between DVR server and HDHR, devices configured for Direct couldn't play live TV, kept saying no connection and must have been because of what you said, the client was trying connect directly to the tuner and couldn't find that network.I've had no issues using Stream so I'll just change back to a different subnet and use Stream everywhere.

When I use Stream - stats always show HLS

I also notice that with Stream changing channels is noticeably slower.
