Personal video metadata v. directory structure

I found the feature to add "home movies" to the DVR and started adding a few, meticulously entering detailed metadata about each one. After stepping back and seeing how they appeared on screen, I decided to restructure how I presented them and after moving the files around, discovered that the meta data had disappeared. My assumption is the metadata is found based on the path to the video file and the new path no longer exists. If that is the case, it is REALLY annoying. Is there something I'm missing/doing wrong?

Your assumption is correct and we understand. We don't love it either.

Some work is being done to make this better, but it's not there yet. But we do plan on tracking content based on the content, not the path, in the future.

I would think a digest/hash of the first N-hundred bytes of a video with file size would make a suitable key. Whatever.

Yes, that's exactly the plan and it's already implemented. It's just a matter of migrating the system to use that, which is delicate.

We'll be looking into it soon, since we've just delivered a very large update.

Great minds think alike, 35 years of SWE does that to you. I'll be looking forward to the feature when its delivered. In the mean time, I have a lot of catching up to do with the new delivery.

Came here to ask about this! And glad to hear there is hope!

I added hard drives haphazardly over a couple of years and now that it's time for another new one I've decided six is too many! So I'm trying to consolidate. I'm moving all my recorded videos to a new larger 12tb drive, but may hold off moving my imported media for now since I spent so much time on custom images and metadata.

Exactly, I imported half a dozen videos but stopped when I realized I would lose a lot of work. I'll probably keep copying files over but won't do any meta-data until the feature is updated.

I also just moved from an old mac mini to a new one, but since I put all of the data on a USB drive, it took little work to do the migration, did it in about 5 minutes. I have moved my personal media folder to that drive, now, too.

NFO support can't come soon enough for stuff like this. I have tons of old games but I don't have the time to manually input the metadata of each one.

If I had used the Imports folder in the DVR directory instead of configuring another source, would I have been able to move my non-recorded videos to another Imports directory on another drive while saving all the metadata? Is that what the Imports folder was meant for?
