PlayOn Cloud Integration Thoughts/Suggestions

Hello. I am impressed with the PlayOn Cloud integration. It's been out for a while and seems it's out of beta. It has been working flawlessly for me but it's been a while so I thought I would offer some feedback.

  • Currently the recorded content shows up in the library. Would it be possible for it to be in "Recordings" instead? That would make more sense to me because I am recording content rather than importing it. I guess I am doing both actually, but it seems like that would make more sense for the end user. I think of the library as more of a archive.

  • PlayOn Cloud recently added YouTube as a recording source. I like this a lot because it's a easier way to consume YouTube content. Currently when it imports, it shows up as a movie -- odd but not a big deal. But it doesn't parse out the cover photo, so I just get the standard Channels logo. I suspect the cover is in the metadata because if I save the file to my desktop, the cover file appears.

Anyway, those are my two thoughts. Hope this is helpful.

You can treat PlayOn recordings as imports. Just set up import directories for TV and Movies. Separate movies from TV. Works great. Have fun.

Yeah I get that but they don’t show up in recordings — meaning DVR recordings. I get that Channels is not doing the recording but it is being pulled in as a source, so it makes sense to me that it would show as a recording.

I “manage” all my recordings on an iPad. Some TV episodes were recorded OTA and stored in the Channels/TV directory. Some were recorded prior to my use of Channels and the episodes were imported into an “Imported TV” directory on my server. All the episodes just appear as recordings on the iPad. The episodes seamlessly are integrated by Channels. For me, this just works and I really enjoy Channels. I can watch on the iPad or Amazon Fire TV 4K stick. Both work the same way.

Yeah. That’s how it appears on my iPhone but on my FireTV recordings are separate. Maybe there’s a setting I missed somewhere, but I kinda like new content being separated from imported content. To me, PlayOn content should be considered new.

I too considered the default destination a bit unintuitive and would prefer for these PlayOn Cloud recordings to land in Channels' "recordings" section instead.
