Playstation Vue now available on AppleTV

For those of us that really cut the cord and living OTA, but miss some old cable channels (DisneyXD, SyFy, USA, TNT). Playstation Vue is now available for the AppleTV 4G. I am trying out their simplest package for $35.00. It includes everything I lost and missed (except Fox Sports SW) (which I can get for another $5).

The Best Parts:

  1. They allow 5 Concurrent Streams
  2. They include the ability to FF/RW and have a DVRish function that will allow watching selected shows for up to 28 days
  3. They provide the Cable Authentication for ALMOST EVERY ONE of my AppleTV apps!!! (Except Viacom)

I love my OTA and don’t plan on changing that, but this allows me to use the ATV Apps for the 4 Networks that I miss and occasionally want.

I started installing the PS Vue app for Apple TV last night and finished up this morning - 5 ATVs. Generally, it works well. There seems to be some minor bugginess with loading the guide but otherwise not too bad.

The one thing that I found that is a problem is they limit you to just 5 devices signed in at a time. This wouldn’t be so bad except that even if you sign out to free up another device you have to wait 3 hours to sign in to the next device AND it seems you have to re-activate it as well.

PSVue needs to address the multiple devices and activation or else it won’t last long against Sling.

Honestly, I am more interested in it for the authentication to the other Network ATV Apps, than in watching from them live (in the PSView APP). The only thing I watch live is sports and CNN, and I can do that in apps now. Once the new Apple “TV” app integrates into the apps and if PlayStation Vue is available as a single sign on TV Provider for the AppleTV I am going to be very content…

This is becoming a very interesting time. SlingTV, PSView and soon DirecTV now…

Wasn’t a fan of their implementation of the Guide. (Or the User interface. Felt clumsy…). It worked, and it’s better than my experience with SlingTV’s. But still felt clumsy.

For me, outside the content itself, the user experience is critical. I loved that Sling provides the content, but I felt it was too clumsy to consume easily, (and you only get WatchESPN from an app perspective.). I felt the actual web experience for PSVue was better than what they provided on their ATV, but them implementation on the ATV fails. They should have tried to mimick the look/feel of the ATV, keep the UI clean and simple. I can’t see me using their app on a regular basis unless they address that. I am sure it is a usage parity for the PS3 or PS4 which is good for those customers, just feels clumsy on the ATV.

Can’t disagree with you about the UI; I’m not a fan of it either. I was really hoping they’d align more to the Apple experience with their port, but that didn’t happen…

For my use though the single (or two) apps is better than each of the individual apps as my wife is very much a channel up / channel down person. So, even though the UI is sub-par it’s better than 20 or so apps in our house.

I guess in the end it just comes down to what works best under the circumstances.

Still am curious to see what DirecTV and Video come up with though I’m fairly content now with the combination of Channels, PS Vue & Netflix all on the ATV. Already selling off my Amazon Fires on eBay…
