I would like you to record all Godzilla movies from Pluto IN PLEX by setting up a onetime pass... this is just a challenge... can easily be done in Channels DVR.
As I am certain you are aware Plex only allows recording from live TV sources, not on-demand content like Pluto movies; hence you would have to indivdually record each episode by date and schedule. I personally never use Pluto or any of those junk channels in Plex.
All my Plex services are via xteve which I can use to set all my M3U program channels such as HBO, Cinemax, etc, and can setup recording any series shows such as Game of Throne or Dune. Bit suprised you didn't know that, but maybe you are unfamiliar with xteve with which you can do just about anything in Plex you can do in Channels DVR.
Plex DVR is very limited was just pointing that out no smart passes/advanced. Very familiar with XTEVE and Threadfin.
for starters, the interface for browsing, channel surfing, and actually watching shows is vastly different. Channels wins by a mile. Secondly, YTTV’s DVR isn’t exactly “unlimited.” Recordings expire after 9 months, or makes the advertising unskippable. With Channels DVR, the MP4 recordings are yours to keep, to do with as you please.
Integration with Channels DVR is precisely what made all of these FAST sources with all of their channels (Pluto, SamsungTV+, Tubi, Plex, etc.) less junky IMO. There’s lots of great content offered, at no extra cost, and being able to comskip and time-shift just like any other linear broadcast in one centralized DVR library has been a game-changer.
I partially agree with this statement. It depends on what you intend to do with the DVR recordings.
In my case, I use Channels DVR to record and KEEP a lot of recordings forever in order to build my own library of shows and movies so I will have no dependency on the internet at a later date.
As you know, "unlimited DVR" in YouTube TV means unlimited space and not time since recordings expire after 9 months so you can't keep them forever.
That's the big difference for me.
Moreover, as pointed out by @Edwin_Perez, Channels DVR is way better, there is no comparison.
--- Edit: just saw @Fofer's post after I finished writing mine. Basically, we agree.
I agree that Channels DVR is great, and don't disagree which much of what you said, but again I would state that I have no issues with using Plex and find my personal needs and use of television viewing are adequately met with just using Plex, so should Channels DVR choose to do a price hike I will discontinued using it and that was all I was attempting to point out. Many novalist cord cutters will do fine with just using Plex.
In terms of channels and free content, for those who are unable to do their own programming and create their own channel lists you are correct. Those free channels would be good to use.
I do something similar I use EMBY to watch because I have lifetime but I use Channels DVR to do all my recordings because of advanced passes.
I recently tried setting up Plex using the Plex Tunner Hack, and while it worked (mostly) - Plex's inability to watch a show while it is being recorded is a show stopper for us. Immediately went back to Big Purple (which I loathe the horrendous color scheme) for the functionality.
Hey there. You absolutely can watch a show while it’s being recorded on plex. You go to the live tv screen (live tv guide and click on it) it will ask if you want to watch it where the recording is at or from the start. I will wait 15mins and then skip through the commercials.
something nobody is saying, plex supports more clients. its the main reason i keep it around. easier to share with just about anybody.
I did try that (found the same advice in a reddit post) however I was never prompted and it just started playing live. It's also too cumbersome IMO compared to Big Purple where it's displayed right on the home screen. No scrolling through several dozens of channels to see what is recording so I can start watching before it finishes.
Interesting. Could be the platform to stream it. I cannot use plex app on my LG tv app. It’s so slow and clumsy. On my Apple TV is fast and flawless.
Channels is great for the Live TV and DVR-ing stuff while JF is great for the on-demand and watching recordings stuff IMO
ChannelsDVR for live tv/DVR is very user friendly imo.
For DVR
Things have always just worked for me on channels. Set a pass and forget. Commercial detector and editor very easy to use.
Plex has always been abit more of an arm wrestle for me. Issues with passes not recording sometimes. Shows being changed from the guide data to random shows once added to my library. Commercial detector not running. Can’t edit commercials in the plex software.
For live TV
Channels always has had a superior video player. Client side deinterlacing, better seeking of buffer, better handling of dvb_teletext.
Though plex has been improving their player on iOS and Apple TV and although it’s not finished yet the gap between their players is definitely closing.
Sharing media is still in plex favour though with user accounts, though seems as though channels is addressing that soon!
Once that is addressed the only con with use channels is purple that can get abit overbearing at times! Even just a black and a white theme with purple accents
