I choose the thumbnail option in channels DVR recordings I also chose the detect commercial options. Recordings brought into plex skip commercials the same way as if I have recorded them in plex. Super happy 
I used to be an avid Plex user and have a lifetime subscription but gave it up a few years back when I discovered this. Plays 100% of my movie / tvshow collection without stuffing around with transcoding (Plex always had random issues). Free to air and IPTV streams is an exceptional experience with Channels DVR. I use Dispatcharr as the intermediary for generating the M3U and EPG and sorting etc and even my wife who hates technology loves the interface and how easy it is to record and have commercials removed. I think the cost is pretty fair although a lifetime would be great addition

I love Channels DVR and was happy using it for recording live TV that I would watch and delete. What I discovered this year is that recording live TV with Channels works well as long as you watch it within the Channels app. Viewing recordings on Plex (or any of the other options such as Infuse, Plexy, etc.) has issues when it comes to closed captions/subtitles. They appear as an unknown file and the only remedy is to switch them on and off when first viewing the video. Then they work fine. If I record on PlayOn, I have no issues and no workarounds are required. The closed captions/subtitles simply work without accessing the video settings and turning the "unknown" file on and off to trigger the closed captions. I did reach out to Channels support but they dismissed my issues as a Plex problem and refused to look into it any further. If you search online, you will see that having to turn the unknown subtitles on and off is an actual temporary fix and not simply my imagination or my unique problem. Bottom line, if I want to permanently save a tv show, I buy PlayOn credits and record it. Yes, it would be great to record from OTA for "free" but having to fiddle around with the subtitles is not worth it to me. It's simply annoying.
I always use Closed Captions and I never thought Plex did a very good job with those. In fact, I don't really like anything about the TV viewing on Plex. Channels DVR does the best job with TV viewing and the Closed Captions are great. I have also tested Emby. It works fine with Closed Captions on the Channels DVR recordings. Emby has recently updated their Android/FireTV clients and the TV viewing is really good.
