Hey guys … if i download the channel app without the HDHomeRun can i be able to watch live tv on my apple tv4 and would i be able to get canadian channels ?
No, the app only works if you have a HDHomeRun unit installed on your home network.
Oh i see … thank you so much … but how many channels will i be able to get here in canada if i buy one?
Depends on your area and broadcasters. Basically the HDHoneRun device converts all your OTA signals into a stream and transmits them throughout your home over wifi or Ethernet so they can be picked up by capable devices with certain apps like the Apple TV with the Channels app.
Check out this site to see what you can get for free if you have an ariel and HDHR device:

This should help you see what channels you can get for free in your area, and also a guide for what those channels actually broadcast.
If it has what you hoped, buy a half decent ariel and one of the HDHR devices, connect the two, plug this into your router and you’re good to go. HDHR do their own Veiw app so you can watch the streams on any PC or Laptop connected to your network at no extra cost, or you can get the 4th gen Apple TV and the Channels app to watch it on your big HDTV in the Frontroom. I’ve gone for the latter and now do 100% of my TV watching through Channels on the Apple TV. The Apple TV allows you to pause and rewind live TV in the channels app thanks to its 32gb or 64gb of internal storage.
The guys at Channels are working on producing a DVR feature for the Channels app. It’s a work in progress and hasn’t even reached the Alpha stage yet. The DVR will almost certainly require you to have a NAS device (network attached storage device) on your network to act as a location to store any recordings.
There is also an all in one alternative. I’ll pm you this as I don’t like public ally promoting other products as I’m a harden channels fan.
